| Socks introduction: was formerly made of woven
cloth but now of knitted wool, silk, cotton or nylon. Socks are a
baglike covering for the foot and/or lower leg, which is designed
to: 1) ease chafing between the foot and footwear;
2) keep feet warm, and absorb sweat from the feet. Socks are
designed for wear with footwear that covers the entire foot, such
as athletic shoes, boots, or dress shoes.
Socks help to absorb this sweat and draw it to areas of the sock where air can wick the perspiration away. Socks not only help with sweat, they also help keep feet warm and dry in cold environments where frostbite can be a common problem. In addition, Socks come in many colors, though are typically dark for formal attire and white for athletic or casual attire. Colored socks may be a key part of a sport team's uniform. Stockings is a close-fitting, variously elastic garment covering the foot and lower part of the leg, but usually not intended to conceal the leg. In modern usage, stocking specifically refers to the form of women's hosiery configured as two pieces. The terms thigh highs and stockings are interchangeable, and are quite distinct from pantyhose. The most convenient way to wear stockings is to wear panties over the stockings and garters. This pins the garters to the body, which makes it less obvious exactly what is being worn. |
