Chemical & Inorganic Compounds Introduction
Inorganic Chemical, the study of all the elements and their compounds with
the exception of carbon and its compounds, which fall under the category of
organic chemistry. An inorganic compound is a chemical compound not containing
carbon and hydrogen atoms bonded to each other. Branches of Inorganic Chemicals
include applications in organic chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, coordination
chemistry, geochemistry, inorganic technology, nuclear science and energy,
organometallic compounds, synthetic inorganic chemistry, etc.
Although the number of inorganic compounds is huge, it is indeed
overshadowed by the number of organic compounds, which comprise the vast
majority of all compounds known. There are four categories of inorganic
chemical reactions: combination reactions, decomposition reactions, single
displacement reactions, and double displacement reactions.
Two prominent inorganic chemicals, ammonia and sulfur, are also derived in
large part from petroleum. Ammonia production requires hydrogen from a
hydrocarbon source. Traditionally, the hydrogen was produced from a coke and
steam reaction, but today most ammonia is synthesized from liquid petroleum
fractions, natural gas, or refinery gases. Carbon compounds are defined as
strictly inorganic: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonates, to name but a
few. All these compounds have no hydrogen atoms bonded to the carbon.
In the past it was believed that organic compounds are found only in
organisms, and this was how the initial distinction between the two groups had
been made. Today, however, we know that this is far from true: thousands of
organic compounds were synthetically formed; they don't come from and don't
exist in organisms: drugs and plastics, for example. At the same time, many
inorganic compounds exist in organisms, and are essential to life: sodium
chloride (also called salt), carbonic acid, phosphate ions and many more.
